Call for proposals - Software Infrastructure and Continuous Delivery Engineer
About KDE
KDE is an international community dedicated to developing Free and Open Source Software for end users. Contributions are made by thousands of talented volunteer contributors (developers, artists, marketers, translators, documentation writers, etc.) worldwide, working on software such as a desktop environment, graphics applications, PIM apps, games, educational software, and more. KDE e.V. is the legal organization behind KDE, representing and supporting the community.
About the role
KDE's software is developed, tested, packaged, and delivered using a wide range of infrastructure and automation that is fundamental to enabling a good developer experience for our community and bringing KDE software to users reliably. These systems support a large and diverse software stack, many development teams, and a continuous flow of contributions from around the world.
You will join KDE's vibrant development community to improve the systems that take KDE software from source code to tested, packaged, and deliverable artifacts. The focus of this role is on strengthening KDE's continuous delivery capabilities: making it easier, safer, and more reliable to build, test, package, publish, and deliver KDE software across projects and platforms.
Qualifications and skills
- 3+ years of experience working with Free and Open Source Software infrastructure, build systems, continuous integration, continuous delivery, release automation, or software distribution systems
- Strong understanding of Linux-based development environments, automation, packaging, deployment, and delivery workflows
- Experience maintaining CI/CD pipelines, build workers, test environments, publishing jobs, artifact repositories, and related developer infrastructure
- Experience improving automated delivery workflows, including build reproducibility, test reliability, release readiness, artifact promotion, or publishing processes
- Familiarity with scripting and automation using languages such as Python, shell scripting, or similar tools
- Familiarity with GitLab
- Ability to work within an open community and gather requirements from different sources
- Understanding of software development workflows, version control systems, collaborative code review processes, and release engineering practices
- Experience with containers, virtualization, configuration management, distributed build infrastructure, or reproducible build environments is a plus
- Familiarity with KDE, Qt, or other large Free Software projects is a plus
Essential functions and responsibilities
You will take on tasks that are relevant to KDE's developer and delivery infrastructure and need attention to keep our software production workflows reliable, useful, and sustainable. This generally means working on continuous integration and continuous delivery systems, build and test infrastructure, automation, publishing workflows, deployment tooling, and other services used by KDE contributors.
A central part of the role will be improving how KDE software moves from development to delivery: ensuring that changes can be built, tested, packaged, published, and made available to users with less manual intervention, better reliability, and clearer feedback to contributors.
- Maintain and improve KDE's continuous integration and continuous delivery infrastructure, including build jobs, test jobs, runners, publishing jobs, artifact generation, and supporting services
- Diagnose and fix failures in CI/CD pipelines, build environments, packaging jobs, automated test setups, publishing processes, and delivery workflows
- Improve the reliability, performance, reproducibility, and maintainability of KDE's developer and delivery infrastructure
- Implement automation to reduce manual work in building, testing, packaging, publishing, promoting, and delivering KDE software
- Improve continuous delivery workflows so KDE teams can more confidently produce tested and deliverable software artifacts
- Maintain and update build images, containers, virtual machines, and other reproducible development, testing, packaging, and delivery environments
- Work with KDE teams to address infrastructure issues affecting development, review, testing, packaging, release, publishing, and delivery workflows
- Help port CI/CD and infrastructure components to newer versions of the relevant technology stack when needed
- Improve observability, documentation, and failure reporting so contributors can better understand and act on infrastructure and delivery issues
- Continually improve infrastructure practices by cleaning up legacy jobs, updating automation, adding checks, improving delivery pipelines, and performing maintenance-related tasks
- Execute grant-funded infrastructure and delivery work in line with agreed objectives and deliverables
